The heat pump symptoms we hear most
- Air out of the vents feels cool even though the heat is running Reversing valve stuck in cooling, low refrigerant charge, or a system running on backup heat only
- The outdoor unit is packed in ice and stays that way Defrost control, sensor or board failure, restricted airflow, or a refrigerant charge problem
- Heat pump runs constantly and never satisfies the thermostat Undercharge, failing compressor, dirty coils, or duct leakage in an older retrofit system
- The furnace side takes over on mild days when it shouldn't Dual-fuel changeover setting, outdoor sensor, or thermostat wiring and staging fault
- Loud bang or shudder when the system switches between heating and cooling Reversing valve or solenoid trouble, refrigerant migration, or loose mounting hardware
People call this heat pump repair or heat pump service. Same visit, same written quote, same technician.
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Check the thermostat: fresh batteries, set to Heat, and the setpoint at least a few degrees above the room temperature.
- 2Look at the breaker panel. Heat pumps usually have two breakers, one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor unit, and a tripped one that will not reset needs us.
- 3Change or check the filter. A loaded filter chokes airflow and is a common reason a heat pump ices up or short cycles.
- 4Clear leaves, snow drifts, tall grass and stacked items away from the outdoor unit so it can breathe, and make sure supply and return vents inside are open.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?
Heat pump air is cooler than furnace air by nature, so lukewarm can be normal. Genuinely cool air usually means a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, or the outdoor unit is not running and the indoor backup heat is carrying the house alone.
Is ice on the outdoor unit always a problem?
A light frost that clears during a defrost cycle is normal. Thick ice covering the coil, or ice that never melts, points to a defrost sensor or board failure, an airflow restriction or a charge issue. Call us before running it further.
What is a dual-fuel system and why does mine switch back and forth?
Dual-fuel pairs a heat pump with a gas or propane furnace. A control decides which one runs based on outdoor temperature. Switching is normal, but if the furnace runs on mild days the changeover setting, outdoor sensor or thermostat wiring needs checking.
Can you repair my heat pump in cold weather?
Yes. Heating season is when most heat pump calls come in. We diagnose in the cold every winter, and we will tell you plainly whether a repair holds or whether the unit is at the end of a reasonable life.
Why does my emergency heat run so much?
Backup heat is meant to help on the coldest days, not carry the house. Constant use usually means the outdoor unit is not producing heat, a defrost problem is locking it out, or the thermostat is calling for backup too early.
My heat pump smells like burning when the backup heat comes on. Should I worry?
If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, get everyone out of the house, call 911 or your gas utility, then call us. A brief dusty smell from electric backup strips at first use is common, but anything sharp or persistent needs a technician.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. That detail tells us what parts to bring along.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow and the equipment itself before we quote anything. If the problem sits in the ductwork rather than the unit, we say so plainly.
- Step 3
We repair and explain
Most air conditioning repair and heating repair work finishes in one visit. We show you the failed part, explain what caused it, and tell you what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us
- Propane and dual fuelPlenty of homes in our service area run propane heat or a dual fuel setup with a heat pump. We know how those systems switch over and why a bad changeover setting can leave you cold and burning fuel.
- Older houses, added ductworkFarmhouses often got ducts decades after they were built, run through crawl spaces and attics. When the equipment tests fine but rooms still fight each other, we look at the duct runs and static pressure.
- Repair before replacementA failed capacitor, a cracked wire, a clogged drain or a bad control board is a repair, not a new system. We tell you when the equipment is genuinely finished and when it is not.
- Plain talk on the phoneWe ask what the thermostat reads, whether the outdoor unit is spinning, and when it last worked normally. That two minute conversation often shortens the visit and keeps the repair cost down.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
