What the repair involves
A heat pump has to reverse itself periodically to melt frost off the outdoor coil, then switch back to heating. When that sequence fails, we trace it end to end. We watch a full cycle if the weather cooperates, checking whether the board calls for defrost, whether the reversing valve actually shifts, and whether the outdoor fan stops the way it should. Sometimes the fix is a single sensor. Sometimes it is a control board that has quit timing correctly. We test before we replace parts.
What we check and replace
We start with the defrost thermostat or coil sensor, since a sensor reading the wrong temperature will either skip defrost or run it forever. From there we look at the defrost control board, the reversing valve and its solenoid, the outdoor fan motor and relay, and the auxiliary heat staging. Airflow and refrigerant charge matter too, because a starved coil frosts faster than it should. Blocked drainage under the unit is another common one on older farmhouse installs where the pad has settled.
How we decide this is the right call
Ice that melts within a normal cycle is not a repair. Ice that builds into a solid block, a unit that steams and refreezes over and over, or heating bills climbing because backup strips are carrying the load, those tell us the defrost side needs attention. We also weigh the age and condition of the system. On a heat pump with a failing compressor, chasing a defrost board is money spent twice. We will tell you which situation you are in.on my the outdoor unit ever normal?

Is frost on my heat pump ever normal?
Yes. A light coat of frost on the outdoor coil in cold, damp weather is expected, and the system should clear it on its own within a cycle. Solid ice that lasts hours is the problem worth calling about.
Should I pour water on the ice?
No. Warm water can refreeze in the base pan and make things worse, and you risk damaging coil fins or wiring. Switch to emergency heat if your thermostat offers it, then call us to diagnose the cycle.
Why does my heat pump steam outdoors?
Steam rising off the outdoor unit usually means defrost is working. The coil warms up, melts frost, and the vapor shows. If you see steam repeatedly within a short span, the cycle may be triggering too often.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. That detail tells us what parts to bring along.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow and the equipment itself before we quote anything. If the problem sits in the ductwork rather than the unit, we say so plainly.
- Step 3
We repair and explain
Most air conditioning repair and heating repair work finishes in one visit. We show you the failed part, explain what caused it, and tell you what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us
- Propane and dual fuelPlenty of homes in our service area run propane heat or a dual fuel setup with a heat pump. We know how those systems switch over and why a bad changeover setting can leave you cold and burning fuel.
- Older houses, added ductworkFarmhouses often got ducts decades after they were built, run through crawl spaces and attics. When the equipment tests fine but rooms still fight each other, we look at the duct runs and static pressure.
- Repair before replacementA failed capacitor, a cracked wire, a clogged drain or a bad control board is a repair, not a new system. We tell you when the equipment is genuinely finished and when it is not.
- Plain talk on the phoneWe ask what the thermostat reads, whether the outdoor unit is spinning, and when it last worked normally. That two minute conversation often shortens the visit and keeps the repair cost down.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
