What the job involves
A capacitor is the part that gives the motor the shove it needs to start and keeps it turning steadily. When it weakens, the motor draws too much current, overheats and eventually quits. We shut power down at the disconnect, discharge the capacitor safely, and test it against its rated value rather than guessing by looking at it. If the motor itself has failed bearings or a shorted winding, we match a replacement on voltage, horsepower, rotation and mounting so it fits the unit properly. Most visits are done the same day.
What we check and install
We check the capacitor reading, motor amp draw, winding resistance, the contactor, and the wiring at the terminals, since burnt connections often take a motor with them. On the indoor side we look at the blower wheel for dirt buildup and confirm the filter is not choking airflow, because a starved blower runs hot and dies early. Replacement parts we install include run and dual-run capacitors, condenser fan motors, blower motors and the mounting hardware, brackets and fan blades that go with them.
How we decide it is the right call
We measure before we replace anything. A capacitor that reads well below its rating gets changed. A motor that spins freely, reads within spec and draws normal current stays, and we keep looking at the contactor, control board or low refrigerant charge instead. If a motor has already burnt out we tell you what killed it, because a blocked coil or restricted return will do it again. On older systems we will be straight with you about whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Should the capacitor be replaced at the same time as the fan motor?
Usually yes. A new motor paired with a tired capacitor is running under strain from day one. We test the capacitor whenever we change a motor and replace it if the reading has drifted.
Why does my outdoor unit hum without the fan turning?
That is a common sign of a failed capacitor or seized motor. The compressor may still be trying to run and can overheat, so switch the system off at the thermostat and call us.
How long does a fan motor replacement take?
Most capacitor swaps take under an hour. A condenser or blower motor replacement usually runs one to three hours, longer if the motor is buried in tight ductwork or an older farmhouse air handler.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. That detail tells us what parts to bring along.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow and the equipment itself before we quote anything. If the problem sits in the ductwork rather than the unit, we say so plainly.
- Step 3
We repair and explain
Most air conditioning repair and heating repair work finishes in one visit. We show you the failed part, explain what caused it, and tell you what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us
- Propane and dual fuelPlenty of homes in our service area run propane heat or a dual fuel setup with a heat pump. We know how those systems switch over and why a bad changeover setting can leave you cold and burning fuel.
- Older houses, added ductworkFarmhouses often got ducts decades after they were built, run through crawl spaces and attics. When the equipment tests fine but rooms still fight each other, we look at the duct runs and static pressure.
- Repair before replacementA failed capacitor, a cracked wire, a clogged drain or a bad control board is a repair, not a new system. We tell you when the equipment is genuinely finished and when it is not.
- Plain talk on the phoneWe ask what the thermostat reads, whether the outdoor unit is spinning, and when it last worked normally. That two minute conversation often shortens the visit and keeps the repair cost down.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
