What AC Compressor Repair Actually Involves
Most of the work is diagnosis before anything gets replaced. We check the electrical side first, because a bad capacitor, a burned contactor or a failed start relay will keep a healthy compressor from turning over, and those are far cheaper fixes. If the compressor itself is shorted, seized or has lost internal compression, replacement is the honest answer. That means recovering refrigerant, swapping the compressor, replacing the filter drier, pulling a vacuum and recharging to the correct weight. It is a half day or more of careful work, not a quick swap.taste
What We Check Before Calling It
We measure voltage and amp draw at the compressor, test the capacitor, check the contactor for pitting, and read suction and liquid pressures against outdoor temperature. We look at superheat and subcooling to see whether the charge is right, because low refrigerant from a leak is what kills most compressors in the first place. Dirty condenser coils, a failing outdoor fan motor and blocked airflow indoors all raise head pressure and shorten compressor life, so we inspect those too and note what caused the failure.
How We Decide Repair Versus Replacement
Age, refrigerant type and the condition of the rest of the system drive the decision. On a newer unit with clean coils and a good fan motor, a compressor change makes sense. On an older system using R22, where the coil is corroded and the leak that caused the failure is still there, putting a new compressor into it usually buys a short reprieve. We walk you through both paths with what we found, and if you have a heat pump or dual-fuel setup we factor in how it handles heating too.

Can a compressor be repaired, or does it always get replaced?
The sealed compressor itself cannot be opened and rebuilt in your yard. What often gets repaired is everything around it, the capacitor, contactor, wiring or refrigerant charge. We test those first before quoting a replacement.
Why did my compressor fail?
Usually low refrigerant from a slow leak, restricted airflow from a dirty filter or coil, or a failed electrical part making it try to start over and over. We find the cause so the new one lasts.
My outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin. Is that the compressor?
Often it is a failed capacitor rather than the compressor, which is a much smaller repair. Shut the system off at the thermostat so it stops straining and call us to test it.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form and describe what changed. Warm air, no air, a smell, a noise, a breaker that keeps tripping. That detail tells us what parts to bring along.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
We check the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow and the equipment itself before we quote anything. If the problem sits in the ductwork rather than the unit, we say so plainly.
- Step 3
We repair and explain
Most air conditioning repair and heating repair work finishes in one visit. We show you the failed part, explain what caused it, and tell you what to watch for next season.

Why homeowners call us
- Propane and dual fuelPlenty of homes in our service area run propane heat or a dual fuel setup with a heat pump. We know how those systems switch over and why a bad changeover setting can leave you cold and burning fuel.
- Older houses, added ductworkFarmhouses often got ducts decades after they were built, run through crawl spaces and attics. When the equipment tests fine but rooms still fight each other, we look at the duct runs and static pressure.
- Repair before replacementA failed capacitor, a cracked wire, a clogged drain or a bad control board is a repair, not a new system. We tell you when the equipment is genuinely finished and when it is not.
- Plain talk on the phoneWe ask what the thermostat reads, whether the outdoor unit is spinning, and when it last worked normally. That two minute conversation often shortens the visit and keeps the repair cost down.
- All major brands, gas & electricCarrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, York and more, as an independent company.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
