What Nonstop Running Actually Means in Cold Weather

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so the colder it gets outside, the less heat it can pull in per minute and the longer it has to run to hold your setpoint. At 45 degrees outside, a healthy system cycles on and off. At 20 degrees, it may run for hours at a stretch. That alone is not a fault. What matters is whether the house is actually holding temperature. If the thermostat says 68 and the room feels like 68, long run times are the system doing its job. Cause Family One: Thermostat, Filter and Airflow

Start with the cheap stuff, because it is often the answer. A clogged filter chokes airflow, so the system runs longer and longer trying to move heat it cannot move. Closed or blocked vents do the same thing in one part of the house. A thermostat set to emergency heat or auxiliary heat will run the backup strips and feel like the system never stops. Thermostats with dead batteries or a bad setting also misread the room and call for heat forever. On older farmhouses where ductwork was added decades after the house was built, leaky or undersized ducts make even a good heat pump run nonstop. That is a fixable duct problem, not a broken heat pump.

Cause Family Two: Defrost, Refrigerant Charge and Outdoor Coil

In cold damp weather, frost builds on the outdoor coil and the system is designed to melt it off periodically. If the defrost control, sensor or reversing valve is not working, the coil ices over and the heat pump runs constantly while delivering almost nothing. A heat pump buried in snow, leaves or drifted mulch has the same problem. Low refrigerant charge is another common cause of endless run times with weak warm air at the registers. Refrigerant is not a homeowner item and it does not get used up, so low charge means a leak that needs to be found and repaired. That is heat pump repair work, not a top off.

Cause Family Three: Backup Heat, Dual Fuel and Sizing

Many homes across Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia and Georgia run dual fuel, where a heat pump handles mild weather and a propane or gas furnace takes over when it gets cold. If the changeover control or outdoor sensor is misadjusted, the heat pump keeps struggling below its useful range instead of handing off to the furnace. On straight electric systems, failed backup heat strips leave the heat pump alone against weather it cannot beat. And a system that was undersized for the house, or sized before you finished a basement or added a room, will run nonstop every winter no matter how healthy the parts are.

What Is Safe for You to Check, and What We Do Differently

Safe homeowner checks: put in a clean filter, confirm the thermostat is set to heat and not emergency heat, replace thermostat batteries, look for a tripped breaker, make sure supply and return vents are open, and clear snow, leaves and debris a couple feet back from the outdoor unit. Stop there. Do not open panels, touch refrigerant lines or poke at ice on the coil. If you ever smell gas, leave the building first, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside, then call us. When we arrive we measure temperature split, static pressure, amp draw and refrigerant pressures, watch a full defrost cycle, and verify the dual fuel changeover point. That tells us whether you need a repair or a duct fix.

Is it bad for a heat pump to run for hours without shutting off?

Not by itself. Heat pumps are built for long, steady run times in cold weather and that is more efficient than short cycling. It becomes a problem when the house is still losing temperature or the outdoor coil stays iced.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air while it runs constantly?

Heat pump air is cooler than furnace air, so lukewarm is normal. Truly cool air usually points to a defrost fault, low refrigerant from a leak, or a reversing valve stuck in cooling. Those need a technician.

Should I switch to emergency heat when it runs nonstop?

Only briefly, and only if the heat pump is clearly failing. Emergency heat runs expensive backup strips and masks the real problem. Use it to stay warm overnight, then call us for heating repair.
